Dr. Martin Luther King JR.
Mrs. Coretta Scott King

Community Outreach

Primarily through the travel and work of our Founder, Mrs. Coretta Scott King, the Community Outreach program at The King Center has played a vital role in promoting Dr. King’s teachings. Mrs. King has interpreted Dr. King's life, philosophy and teachings to people all over the world through her speeches, writings, messages, media interviews, public statements, and her active participation in forums and meetings.

Recognizing the importance of educating young people about Dr. King's philosophy and methods of nonviolence, she has delivered major addresses to hundreds of colleges and universities. In keeping with the Founder's commitment to help build coalitions for social change, Mrs. King has also delivered speeches and lectures to numerous human rights groups, as well as civic, government, religious and nonprofit organizations.

Mrs. King has addressed critical issues and concerns, including cancellation of Africa's debt, AIDS and health security, voting rights and responsibility, racial justice and race relations, womens rights, disarmament, peaceful conflict-resolution and building community through humanitarian service. She also addressed the need to: eradicate slavery in the Sudan and Mauritania, create a nationwide moratorium on the death penalty, enact stronger gun control and reduce the military budget to invest in human needs.
