Schleirmacher {The relation of morality to rel[igion]} Piety is in no sense a direct cause of moral activity and must not be degraded into the mere [MS:Illegible] of moral purpose; we ought to do everything with religion but nothing from religion, as he puts it, yet in actual life it has morality as its unfailing accompaniment. Not only must every religious man be moral, but no one can be moral in the right way without being religious.
