Abstract

This article in the U.S. News and World Report features an interview with Richard H. Sanger, known for his experience in the United States Foreign Service and his abilities to recognize the patterns of political violence. Asked about the possibility of insurrection here in the United States, Sanger reviews several cases to include the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement, and a disconnect in communication between the ruling class and the "discontented." He describes the process of political violence and states that the country has begun to see examples in the Watts and Detroit riots. Sanger mentions Dr. King's "nuance demonstrations" of nonviolence, but thinks that extremists will find a way to create a violent outcome.
