The Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change
b. 1936 - d. 2008
Along with his former wife Diane Nash, James Luther Bevel was a student organizer in the Nashville Student Movement when Dr. King hired him as Director of Direct Action and Director of Nonviolent Education of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). Rev. Bevel developed and initiated several important campaigns, including the 1965 Selma voting rights effort. He also helped organize the 1963 March on Washington and the 1965 Selma to Montgomery March. Bevel later organized against the Vietnam War and was associated with 1995 Million Man March. His legacy was subsequently marred by an arrest and conviction for child molestation in Virginia in 2008.
