The 2018 Salute to Greatness Awards Gala
ATLANTA- The King Center will present the 2018 "Salute to Greatness" awards recognizing an individual and corporation that exemplify excellence in their leadership and have demonstrated a commitment to social responsibility in the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The awards, one of The King Center's highest honors, will be presented at the annual Salute to Greatness Awards Gala on January 13, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. in the Hyatt Regency Atlanta located at 265 Peachtree Street NE, Atlanta, Georgia, 30303. The Gala is the King Center’s primary fundraiser and is open to the public.
The Salute To Greatness Corporate Honoree is Chobani. Chobani is being recognized for their commitment to making delicious, nutritious, accessible and affordable food, and for their positive impact on underserved communities and those in need. In Central New York and Idaho where it manufactures its products, Chobani has had a transformational impact on the lives it has touched by creating hope and opportunity. The Individual Honoreeis Senator Cory Booker. Senator Booker is being recognized for his contribution as a humanitarian and philanthropist whose work has promoted the values of social and economic justice. Booker has shown a commitment to criminal justice reform, reducing poverty, improving education, and expanding economic development through public-private partnerships. Booker will be awarded for his transformative leadership, "moral imagination", and "creative compassion".
TheCoretta Scott King Organization A.N.G.E.L Award, which recognizes a youth leader (12-25) and a youth organization/initiative that exemplifies exceptional leadership in the areas of peace, social justice, and nonviolent social change. The youth organization recipient is The Boys and Girls Club of America. The Boys and Girls Club works on a daily basis to save and change the lives of children and teens, by providing them with a safe, positive, and engaging environment and programs that prepare and inspire them to achieve Great futures. At the B&GC children have access to mentors and to a safe place to learn, play, and grow.
Alana Simmons, Founder of The Hate Won’t Win Movement, will receive the Coretta Scott King Individual A.N.G.E.L Award. Ms. Simmons started the movement after the 2015 "Mother" Emmanuel AME Church massacre in Charleston, SC where her grandfather Rev. Daniel L. Simmons lost his life. The movement focuses on creating a more culturally cohesive society that appreciates and celebrates differences instead of allowing them to divide us.
The 2018 Christine King Farris Legacy of Service Award recipient is Dr. Robert L. Green, community activist and Author of " At the Crossroads of Fear and Freedom." In 1965, Green was recruited by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to serve as the educational director for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). He helped Dr. King advance Civil Rights legislation by leading the March against Fear in 1966. Now as head of Robert L. Green& Associates he continues to fight for education equality and social injustice.
The Honorable Carmen Yulín Cruz, Mayor of San Juan Puerto Rico is receiving a Special Recognition Award for her Humanitarian Leadership in building the "Beloved Community". In September Hurricane Irma devastated the Carribean leaving complete destruction in its path. For weeks, residents on the island of Puerto Rico were without electricity, homes, food and water. Millions were affected by this storm. In the midst of this adversity, Mayor Cruz rose to the challenge and worked tirelessly to lead her constituents out of despair and into a stronger Puerto Rico.
This years "Salute to Greatness" Award will be followed by the "After Glow"; a dance celebration and after party sponsored by our title sponsor Hyundai, corporate sponsor PNC Bank and media partner CBS Radio (WVEE-FM and WAOK-AM). Special Guests will include Doug E. Fresh, Michael Philips, and DJ B-Hen. The "Afterglow" begins at 10:00pm at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta.
