[Page 1] M[artin] L[uther] King Bible March 26 - [19]46 [Page 3] 1. Deutero - Isaiah is second Isaiah extending from Chap[ter] 40-56. [Inserted text: above 'This': final] This is commonly know as the unknown prophet Many evidences show that Deutero-Isaiah is distinct from the authentic Isaiah. We enter into a different theological and historical atmosphere from that of the authentic Isaiah. The first word; "conport ye." stricks a new note. The authentic Isaiah addressed himself to a pre-exilic people. It is obvious that prophets addressed themselves to conditions existing in [Crossed out: his] [Inserted text: above 'his': their] time. Prophecy is a moral, not a magical thing. It would be absurd for one [Page 4] to prophesy something over a century before it is needed, to a people to whoever it would be irrelevant and unintelligible. There is a difference in the literacy style. There very attitude of this prophet would have been impossible in a pre exilic time. These aspects combined to show that second Isaiah is distinct from Isaiah. II. The exiles did not begin at once to return the Jerusalem after their release by Cyrus. [Inserted text in left margin: not specific returns]This exodus extended over many many [sic] years. it is significant to not that three or four factors [Page 5] caused this slowness in returning. First, many of the people were prospering in business gains. Second many of the people knew nothing of the cultural patterns of Palestine, because they were born in Babylon. Third the transportation at that time was very difficult. It took many tiresome days to make the trip from Babylon to Jerusalem. [Inserted text: above 'these three': The way was had] These three factors caused the exiles to be very slow in returning to there [their] native land III. The problem of the book of Job is that [Page 6] mystery of pain and misfortune. It is that problem of why the rightous [righteous] suffer. Contrary to the accepted belief that the rightous [righteous] gain prosperity and the wicked suffer, the book of Job says that the rightous [righteous] suffer. The author of Job answers this question first by givng a beautiful poetical interpretation of nature and how God works theirin [there in]. He says if you cant understand God's [Inserted text: above 'through': work] through nature, then how can you understand how he handles men [Page 7] Second he says that the rightous [righteous] shall see God. Job ended up seeing God. and shall be vindicated by him. IV. The day of Jehovah meant different things to different men. Joel saw it as brin[g]ing prosperity and abundance to the Hebrews and destruction to all other peoples of the then known world. Amos say [saw] it as a destruction of only the Hebrews. Zephaniah say [saw] it as a destruction of all people. This is a a more universal concept. [Page 8] Isaiah But to all the day of Yahweh meant a day of destruction and judgement [judgment]. (2) Buruch was the scribe who is said to have written directly from the mouth of Isaiah [Inserted text: below 'his prophecies': Jeremiah] his prophecies. (3) The priest-prophet is often referred to as Ezekiel. While Ezekiel was in exile he served as a pastor and a prophet. For this reason Ezekiel in many instances is very ritualistic [Page 9] (4) Holiness code extends from Leviticus chap[ter] 17 to chap[ter] 26. [Inserted text: below 'leviticus chap': and expresses] (5) Canticles is a book of love lyrics expressing the idea of true love being more powerful [than] lust and splendor
